Central to the lightweighting effort is the adoption of fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites. These materials are stronger and considerably lighter than both High Strength Steel and Aluminium.

PlasmaBound provides a step-change technology, termed Controlled Polymer Ablation (CPA), which facilitates the structural adhesive joining of lightweight materials, namely carbon and glass fibre reinforced composites.

The CPA technology will support the accelerated adoption of these lightweight composite materials into multi-material structural assemblies, by enabling reliable adhesive joining which is stronger than the composite structures themselves. Furthermore, the technology is bolstered by 3 additional features: no waste production, reduced reliance on metal fasteners and lower production cost through operation simplification (in-line).

about us

The PlasmaBound is a University College Dublin (UCD) spin-out, with its CPA technology being the product of 5 years R&D and Irish based validation work. This work received extensive support from both the Irish Composites Centre (IComp) and the Enterprise Ireland (EI) Commercialisation Fund which enabled the full-time resource focus on the technologies development. PlasmaBound is currently located within UCD's business incubation and innovation centre, NovaUCD.
