In our Ones to Watch section, we highlight some of the top movers and shakers. This week we feature PlasmaBound.

What is it?

PlasmaBound is the sole provider of a novel surface treatment technology for enhanced structural adhesive joining. The technology enables automotive, aerospace and mass transport original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), amongst others, to produce stronger, lighter, leaner and cleaner product assemblies.

The technology also supports global enterprises in meeting their current and future carbon emissions and fuel efficiency requirements, while also reducing production costs, waste, and improving assembly strength and reliability.

PlasmaBound is currently engaged with five global OEMs spanning a range of market verticals, and is supporting ÉirLoop, Ireland’s entry to the SpaceX Hyperloop competition.

Who’s behind it?

Alan Barry, CEO, is a New Product Introduction (NPI) specialist with a Life Sciences background and 20 years’ experience in both SME and corporate operations. Previously, he founded and grew a multi-million turnover NPI consultancy firm. Dr Nick Barry, CTO, awarded a PhD from University College Dublin (UCD), and the inventor of the PlasmaBound technology, is a process development and new technology introduction specialist with 10 years’ R&D experience.

How is it funded?

PlasmaBound, a UCD spin-out company, has been privately funded to-date by the founders. The company is headquartered at NovaUCD, the Centre for New Ventures and Entrepreneur, and is supported by Enterprise Ireland and InterTradeIreland.

Future plans?

The technology is actively being trialled by two global enterprises and PlasmaBound is currently seeking seed capital to support operations and further trial activities.
